When it comes to swimming pool pumps, it's very important that you consider the whole pump system and not just the pump by itself. So many people fall into the same trap of thinking that bigger is better, no matter what, and this thinking ends up costing people hundreds of dollars each and every month. They then purchase the biggest pool pump available and don't think about the piping set up or their pool size and requirements--i.e. they forget that the pool's system should dictate which type and size of pump you install, not the other way around.
In order to achieve the perfect pumping system for your pool (I define that as the most efficient and least costly), first, take a look at your pool size and actual pool usage. If your pool is small and is used very sparingly then an equally small (and less expensive) pump is all that is required. However, if you have a very large pool (commercial, apartment, or just tons of neighbourhood kids) then you will need a good pump.
What you really should do is sit down with a professional who can help you to determine what your needs are and who will also help you design a complete system that will be efficient and cost-effective. A few things to consider when going through this process:
1) Design of the pipe system. Try to decrease the amount of 90-degree angles in the pipe system. This will allow your pump to use less energy (and thus a smaller pump is required) to pump the water through the system.
2) Buy the swimming pool pump that is just big enough for your system. There is no need to purchase a pump that is built for a 200,000 cubic ft. pool if yours is only 1/4 of that size.
3) Invest in a good pool vacuum or skimming system. This will help keep your pump free of debris and allow you to go longer in between backwashings.
